Dexter students participate in "Color Games" On Tuesday, June 10, 2008 Dexter Regional High School faculty and students participated in its first annual Color Games. This event is a program developed by the Seeds of Peace International Camp, as a team building activity and was modified to fit the entire high school student population at Dexter. The day included academic as well as athletic events, enabling every student a chance to participate and win points for their team. By the end of the day, students of Dexter had befriended peers they had never talked to before and had felt more united than ever. LOCAL DEXTER TEACHER TO BE AN HONORED GUEST OF THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT This October, Peter Devine will depart for Tokyo as a participant in the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund (JFMF) Teacher Program. Mr. Devine a teacher and advisory coordinator at Dexter Regional High School was selected from a national pool of over 1,700 applicants by a panel of educators to earn this honor. This program allows distinguished primary and secondary school educators in the U.S. to travel to Japan for three weeks in an effort to promote greater intercultural understanding between the two nations. Mr. Devine will be among 160 educators visiting Japan in October. They will begin their visit in Tokyo with a practical orientation on Japanese life and culture, and meetings with Japanese government officials and educators. They then will travel in groups of 16 to selected host cities where they will have direct contact with Japanese teachers and students during visits to primary and secondary schools as well as a teachers college. They will also visit cultural sites and local industries in addition to a brief homestay with a Japanese family. The Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund, based in Tokyo, oversees all aspects of the Teacher Program. The program is sponsored by the Government of Japan and was launched in 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the U.S. government Fulbright Program, which has enabled more than 6,000 Japanese citizens to study in the U.S. on Fulbright fellowships for graduate education and research. The Institute of International Education acts as the agency for the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund to coordinate the recruitment and pre-departure activities of the Teacher Program in the United States. Educators from all 50 states and the District of Columbia will be invited to visit Japan. Upon their return, program participants share what they have learned about Japan with their students and communities through a variety of outreach projects. TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL CENTER RECEIVES MELMAC GRANT Tri-County Technical Center (TCTC) in Dexter has been awarded a MELMAC (Maine Educational Loan Marketing Corp.) grant from the MELMAC Education Foundation. TCTC is one of the thirty schools state-wide who were awarded an implementation grant and one of four Technical Centers. The funds granted to the schools are to be used for school- and community-based programs designed to increase students' aspirations for higher education and to help students connect those aspirations to a plan that ensures enrollment in post-secondary education immediately following high school graduation. This is the third round of funding that the Foundation has awarded to Maine high schools and Technical Centers. The grants for Technical Centers are for $48,000 to be used over a four year period. The Centers must provide $8,000 of matching funds in the last two years of the grant. TCTC also received a $5,000 planning grant from the Foundation in the fall of 2007. Since 2003, the MELMAC Education Foundation has worked with 52 (35%) of the 146 public and private Maine high schools. These 52 high schools work with almost 28,000 (39%) of all 71,000 Maine high school students. In addition, the Foundation has provided grants to vocational/technical programs who work with multiple Maine high schools, which may or may not receive MELMAC grants separately. Over $3.4 million has been awarded since 2003 (not counting this current round of awards). TCTC will be implementing the grant by involving all of their students in exploring their options in post-secondary education. College trips to two-, four-year, and technical college programs and businesses will occur. Other activities will include holding workshops on filling out college applications and financial forms, for both students and their parents, Transition Fairs, enrolling in Apprenticeships, and following up on student's plans after they graduate. Local teachers selected for "Christa McAuliffe Award" 2008 Dexter - Regina Herrick and Alyson Saunders, both science teachers from MSAD #46 Dexter Regional High School, have been chosen to receive the "Christa McAuliffe Award" for 2008. This memorial award is given annually to an individual or team who has exhibited outstanding innovation in teaching and learning. The McAuliffe Award acknowledges work that has inspired pride among other educators; represents a unique and high quality professional growth experience; and results in creative, long-lasting collegial learning. As recipients of this honor, Mrs. Herrick and Mrs. Saunders have been awarded a check in the amount of $1,000.00 which will enable them to continue the enormous difference they make in the lives of students and colleagues. Both teachers have also been invited to the 13th Annual "Salute to Excellence in Education Gala" which will be held in Washington, DC on February 8th, 2008. All travel and hotel accommodations as well as incidental costs to attend the gala were provided by the foundation to each teacher as a token of their appreciation. November 2007 MSAD #46 Adult & Community Education will sponsor a Certified Nurse Assistant Course beginning on January 14th, 2008. Classes will be held at the Tri County Tech Center in Dexter from 4:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. Michele Cole will teach this 170 hour state approved course. Remember: Don't open the door October 2007 Operation Graduation is collecting jeans for Hands of Hope in Bangor. Please donate as many as possible. They must be blue and with working zippers and buttons. All sizes are needed. Place items in drop boxes that have been placed in all areas at Dexter Regional High School. $1 per pair of jeans will be donated to Operation Graduation 2008.
